JEFFERSON STREET SEWER MAIN REPLACEMENT PROJECT BEGINS THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 21st

As part of the City's ongoing efforts to provide high quality services to its citizens, we will be replacing a sewer main that runs along a rear easement in the 5300 block of Jefferson Street.  The existing main is over 30 years old and is becoming a maintenance issue due to cracked pipe and root infiltration.  This project is scheduled to start construction the week of February 21st.  During this time, city inspectors will be monitoring the progress and ensure that no interruption in service will take place.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation during the construction process.  We will assure that the contractor returns the area back to its original condition before closing out this project.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Public Works Department at 972.495.7600.

BROOKHOLLOW SEWER LINE REPLACEMENT
CDBG PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION

The City of Sachse, in conjunction with Dallas County Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding, replaced a portion of the 15-inch sewer main in the rear easement along Brookhollow Drive.  Approximately 953 feet of 15-inch clay pipe was replaced with PVC pipe.  Three man holes were also replaced with this project.  The CDBG program is an excellent tool for offsetting infrastructure replacement cost.  The continual rains made the project even more difficult.  The easement and streets will be back to normal soon.  City staff appreciates the patience of the residents in the area during this project.

TxDOT PROPOSES IMPROVEMENTS TO HIGHWAY 78

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is proposing improvements to State Highway 78 from 4,000 feet north of the President George Bush Turnpike in the City of Garland, through the City of Sachse, and continuing to Spring Creek Parkway in the City of Wylie.  The purpose of the proposed project is to improve mobility and traffic safety along the stated limits of SH 78.  Click here to read a more detailed verbal description of the proposed improvements; and click here to view a map of the starting and stopping points of the project.

5th STREET WIDENING PROJECT - ROUTE SELECTED FOR ROADWAY

On June 18th, the Sachse City Council selected an alignment for the 5th Street widening project as presented by Birkhoff, Hendricks & Conway, L.L.P.  This project, approved as part of the November 2006 Bond package, will upgrade a vital arterial roadway and help ease transportation woes in the northeast sector of our city.  Click here to view a map of the selected route.  (The file is extremely large.  Please be patient while it is loading.)

As of January 18, 2008 - Survey work has been completed and the engineers will begin taking soil samples.  We are still on track to begin appraisals in late winter or early spring.  Design drawings of the roadway will be  presented at the City Council meeting of January 21st.  Kansas City Southern Railroad has begun communication on the improvements to the intersection at 5th Street and Highway 78.  With Collin County making improvements to DeWitt Road and the City of Wylie making improvements to McCreary Road (Maxwell Creek), there will be a four-lane divided roadway from Highway 78 to FM 544 in the future.

Engineering work continues on Bunker Hill Road and Murphy Road.  Updates will be posted as they become available.  Dallas County conducted an informational meeting on Murphy Road at Sachse City Hall in November with residents that will be affected by the construction.  It is anticipated that construction to move and relocate utilities will begin the first of 2009.

PUBLIC WORKS PROJECTED IMPROVEMENTS

Sachse Public Works, in conjunction with Dallas County and Collin County, provides street improvements and maintenance throughout Sachse.  The City of Sachse has a mutual aid agreement with Dallas County Road and Bridge for the maintenance, repairs and overlay of city streets throughout Sachse.  The City’s Street Department is responsible for patching potholes in roadways and alleys, installing and maintaining street signs.

TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS

The 2006-2007 Budget allows for continued maintenance and upkeep of 117 miles of existing roadways with continued funding of maintenance projects through the City's budget.  This allows for continuation of overlay and reconstruction projects of streets and roadways.  It also allows for continued asphalt and concrete repairs of alleyways and sidewalks.  However, current maintenance of the City's existing thoroughfare infrastructure presents a challenge due to the excessive drought conditions that impacted the sub-base of every street in Sachse during the summer of 2006.

The expansion project for Murphy Road and Fifth Street continues with the design as a result of the passage of the City's bond propositions.  Both Murphy Road/Highway 78 and Fifth Street/Highway 78 intersections have been upgraded and are waiting on the widening projects to begin.

Finishing the improvement at the intersection of 5th Street and Highway 78 to its ultimate design per the City's Transportation Plan will begin this year with funding from Thoroughfare Impact Fees.

SEWER IMPROVEMENTS

The FY 06-07 budget includes maintaining the existing infrastructure through replacement and refurbishment of current sewer lines to replace old clay lines with new, larger PVC pipe throughout the City.

A specific project that will be addressed is the Brookhollow sewer line.  This is a Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) project and will replace a clay sewer line with PVC line, which will alleviate inflow and infiltration.

WATER IMPROVEMENTS

The City continues to make improvements in the water department by upgrading lines, pump capacity and storage capabilities for better service.

Work has been completed and testing has been done on the new two-million gallon ground storage tank at the Public Works site.  An additional pump will be added to the ground storage system at the Public Works site in preparation for the new 2,000,000 gallon tank.  The City will also complete phase 2 of the replacement and installation of a 16" water line from the Maxwell Creek water storage facility into the City's water system.

The City will also replace a water line along Murphy Road from Blackburn Road to Highway 78.  This line is an older line that will be sized to a 12" line for the whole segment and will be completed in conjunction with the widening of Murphy Road in early 2008.  The water line will be moved and replaced to the edge of the right-of-way prior to the construction.

The City continues with replacement of water meters to upgrade all meters to radio-controlled, or AMR System (Automatic Meter Reading) which allows walk-by or drive-by meter reading.  This is a technologically enhanced program that improves the productivity and timeliness of meter reads and billing cycles.
