HIGHWAY 78 CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY
On November 24, 2009 TxDOT
contractors began removing the remaining trees along the median
of Highway 78. This removal is necessary for the widening of
the highway. In recent weeks the City removed over 20 trees
from the medians and placed them in the City’s parks. The trees
removed were desirable species and of the size that would have a
greater likelihood of survival. The City used over $5,000 of
budgetary and Parks Development funds for the tree moving. The
remaining trees were of species that are not desirable, would be
cheaper to replace rather than to move, were too large for the
equipment available or would present a low likelihood of
survival.

The 22 trees that were saved from the Highway
78 median were re-planted at Heritage Park along the trail.
Shown above are some of the trees planted near the ballfields
and on the back side of the trail. An irrigation line is
also being installed to water the trees to aide in their
transition to their new home.
Thanks to Cynthia Wiseman, Parks Department, for
the photos.
When the Highway 78 project was in the
planning stages, the City advised TxDOT planners that removal of
the trees was not acceptable and negotiated that TxDOT, through
their contractor, would not only replace the trees at no
additional cost to the City or its Citizens but they would
landscape all medians from city limits to city limits. This
landscaping will consist of trees that are naturally grouped and
planting beds, as well as the irrigation system to ensure plant
survival. As part of the negotiations, the landscaping of the
medians was done by licensed landscape architect, again at
TxDOT’s expense.

Planting Plan.
In addition to the trees,
TxDOT is also placing the conduit necessary for the installation
of lights replacing those that have been in the median for
several years. It is the City’s plan to reuse the lights from
the 78 median in the Fifth and Dewitt widening project. New
lights will be placed in the median upon completion of the
widening project in 2011. It is currently planned that these
lights will match the lights at the new municipal complex.
Sachse is a Tree City USA
city and takes its stewardship of the environment very
seriously. The City had this stewardship in mind when
negotiating with TxDOT on this project. The appearance of the
medians will make Highway 78 a show place entryway to Sachse.
We believe everyone will be pleased with the final results.
