City-sponsored events will be highlighted on the events page. If
you know of something happening around Sachse that you would like to see

DIAL 2-1-1 FOR INFORMATION
We all know we can dial 9-1-1 for a police, fire, or medical emergency
and 4-1-1 for a phone number. But did you know you can call 2-1-1
and receive information and referrals for health and human services
needs? Residents in Dallas, Rockwall, Hunt, Collin, and Denton
counties can find information on utility bill assistance, child care,
seniors programs, substance abuse intervention, and job training by
calling 2-1-1. The code provides individuals and families with
free advice on who and where to call for support. Based in the
Community Council of Greater Dallas office, the Area Information Center
is staffed by trained information specialists. They assess each
caller's needs and connect them with the appropriate services.
TIRED OF THOSE TELEMARKETERS
CALLING AT DINNER TIME ?
You can add your name to state-sponsored "No-Call Lists", which will
help limit calls from telephone solicitors. There is a small fee
for this service; however, businesses that engage in telephone
solicitation are required to follow PUC rules and abide by the No-Call
lists. Call toll free at 1.866.TX-NO-CAL (1.866.896.6225) or visit
www.texasnocall.com
for more information or to register.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN SOMEONE WANTS
YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER?
With increasing incidents of identity theft, more attention is
focused on the use of Social Security numbers. People do
not realize the importance of Social Security numbers and what
can happen when their number gets into the hands of the wrong
people. Do you know under what circumstances you are
required to give your Social Security number? Here
are a few guidelines to help.
Your Social Security number is your personal property. Giving
your number is voluntary, just like letting someone borrow your
car. Before you give out your number, you should ask:
> Why is my number needed?
> Is giving my number mandatory or voluntary?
> How will my number be used?
> What happens if I refuse to give my number?
> What law requires that I give my number?
The answers to these questions can help you decide if you give
out your number. The decision is yours.
And, you can keep your Social Security number safe by not
carrying your card in your wallet or purse.
IF YOUR IDENTITY IS STOLEN
HELP! Someone is using my name
and social security number to open credit card accounts. I
had no idea until I started receiving calls from creditors.
Now my credit report shows "bad" accounts. What do I do?
If you find that you are a
victim of ID theft, the Federal Trade Commission urges you to:
1. Contact the fraud departments
of each of the three major credit bureaus and report the theft.
Ask that a "fraud alert" be placed on your file and that no new
credit be granted without your approval.
Equifax: 1.800.525.6285
Experian: 1.888.397.3742
Trans Union: 1.800.680.7289
2. For any accounts that have
been accessed or opened fraudulently, contact the security
department of the appropriate creditor or financial institution.
Close these accounts. Put passwords (not your mother's maiden
name or social security number) on any new accounts you open.
3. File a report with local police or the police where the identity
theft took place. Get the report number or a copy of the report in case
the bank, credit card company or others need proof of the crime.
4. Call the ID Theft Clearinghouse toll-free at 1.877.ID-THEFT
(1.877.438.4338) to report the theft.
The Identity Theft Hotline and the ID Theft Website also give you a
place to go to report the theft to the federal government and receive
helpful information.
