COUNCIL RECOGNIZES BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Mayor Mike Felix and the Sachse City Council recognized October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month by Proclamation at October 6th's Council meeting.  Mayor Felix read the proclamation and presented it to Janet Harkins, a breast cancer survivor.  Janet was diagnosed in 2003 with Inflammatory Breast Cancer, a very aggressive form of breast cancer that very often goes undetected until it is too late.  She is now in remission and we wish her continued success with her healing process.

SACHSE CELEBRATES WITH OLYMPIC HOME TOWN HEROES

Mayor Mike Felix, the Sachse City Council and all our citizens are proud to honor Sachse residents Julie (at left) and Diana Pickler for their hard work and many years of training, which paid off with an unforgettable Olympic experience.  Both girls participated in the Olympic trials, with Julie sustaining injuries that prevented her from achieving a spot on the Olympic team.  Diana, however, came in third in the trials, securing her a spot in the Heptathlon.  Unfortunately, she suffered a hamstring injury and was unable to complete the event.  What an incredible achievement for our home town girls from Sachse.  Mayor Felix presented the girls a Proclamation proclaiming September 2, 2008 at Diana and Julie Pickler Day in Sachse.  CONGRATULATIONS LADIES AND BEST OF LUCK TO YOU IN YOUR FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

UPDATE ON BOND PROPOSITION PROGRESS

Since the passage of all six bond propositions by Sachse voters, City staff has been working on several phases of the propositions.

Proposition 1 - Roadway and transportation improvements to Bunker Hill Road, Dewitt Road (Ingram to Ranch), Murphy Road (SH 78 to Blackburn),  5th Street (SH 78 to Ingram) including purchase of right-of-way:  The City has held two public hearings on the route selection for the 5th Street (SH 78 to Ingram) project and City Council selected a route that best fits all aspects of the project. (Click here to view an aerial map of the selected route.)  Survey work has been completed and the engineers will begin taking soil samples.  We are still on track to begin appraisals in late winter or early spring.  Design drawings of the roadway were presented at the City Council meeting of January 21st.  Kansas City Southern Railroad has begun communication on the improvements to the intersection at 5th Street and Highway 78.  With Collin County making improvements to DeWitt Road and the City of Wylie making improvements to McCreary Road (Maxwell Creek), there will be a four-lane divided roadway from Highway 78 to FM 544 in the future.

Update (Aug. 2008) - Purchase of parcels along the right-of-way for DeWitt/5th Street within the roadway route is nearing completion.  Survey work and movement of utilities will begin soon after all parcels are purchased.

Engineering continues on Bunker Hill Road.  Negotiations with the City of Garland for annexation of a small parcel of land in order to widen the roadway continues.  Once this is complete, work may begin.

Utilities have been relocated and the new water line on Murphy Road is complete.  Bids for construction will go out the end of October 2008.  It is anticipated that construction will begin by the first of 2009.

Proposition 2 - Updates to Salmon Park: The Parks and Recreation Commission and Parks and Recreation Department continue to review the progress on Salmon Park.  The update of the creek bed is complete.  We will watch the new plantings to make sure they survive the dry summer months.

Proposition 3 thru 6 - Municipal Complex Campus - Ron Hobbs Architects (RHA) out of Garland was selected by City Council as the architect for this project. Drawings and floor plans of the buildings have been presented to Council.  Negotiations continue on the layout and look of the facilities.

We will keep everyone posted of bond proposition progress here on the website and in the city's quarterly newsletter.

STRATEGIC PLANNING FOR THE CITY OF SACHSE 2005 - 2010

The City Council met on March 18 and 19, 2005, to develop a strategic plan for Sachse.  Priorities were set for the vital issues of broad concern to the city for the next 3 to 5 years and how the city's resources will be allocated to address these priorities was discussed.  The work product of this session will assist in making decisions that will support the priorities and strategies to be accomplished over the next 1 to 3 years.  Staff is in the process of assessing on-going work and projects regarding the top goal areas for Council as the first step in gap analysis regarding specific goal development.  Click here to see the strategies, goals and visions Council has developed for the city.

SACHSE'S FORM OF GOVERNMENT

Sachse operates under the council-manager form of government.  Under this plan, the voters elect a city council which, in turn, hires a city manager to administer the city's day-to-day operations.

Sachse city council members serve in places and not districts, therefore all council members represent the entire city.  If a citizen has a concern, he/she can contact any of the six council members and/or the mayor.
