CHAMBER BANQUET HONORS SENIOR
VOLUNTEERS

The Annual Sachse Chamber of Commerce Award Banquet was a great time
to honor those seniors who volunteer their time to work in the Chamber
office and at the monthly Chamber luncheons. The senior tables
were sponsored by Baylor Medical Center of Garland and Charles Smith and
Sons Funeral Home.
RSVP: Retired & Senior
Volunteer Program
The Senior Source has been
serving older adults in the greater Dallas area since 1961. The
agency is a partner agency of The United Way of Metropolitan Dallas.
RSVP is part of the Corporation for National and Community
Service.
Older adult volunteers
reinvest in Dallas area communities through the Retired & Senior
Volunteer Program. Individuals 55 years of age and older are
recruited and placed as volunteers with a variety of community
organizations. In Sachse, some of these programs include working at
the Chamber of Commerce, assisting at the Laurie Schwenk Senior Activity Center, working at
the Sachse Library, participating in the Friendly Visiting/Outreach
program, and participating in the reading tutorial program at the
elementary schools. The work is fulfilling for the volunteers and
provides a valuable service to non-profit agencies. It also supplies
volunteers with the opportunity to give back to the community by sharing
their interests and skills obtained through a lifetime.
RSVP also lends support to
each member while they are making their volunteer contribution. RSVP
provides volunteers with free supplemental accident and liability
insurance, recognition, and invitations to seminars, workshops, and forums
with noted speakers.
RSVP volunteers are
involved in a number of significant activities including mentoring and
tutoring adults and youth, assisting individuals and families in crisis,
teaching English as a second language, and preparing mailings for
non-profit agencies, to name a few.
Special Projects include
Professional Placement Network, where retired professionals volunteer in
activities that utilize their professional skills and experience; Seniors
for Immunization, where volunteers assist Immunize Kids! Dallas Area
Infant Immunization Coalition with coordinating education and outreach
activities in the Dallas area to improve the immunization rate of children
two years and under; and Homeland Security, where Silver Guard leaders and
other volunteers work with public safety and emergency assistance agencies
to help insure the safety of our community.
In 2006, Sachse seniors volunteered
over 4,000 hours at the Senior Center, the Sachse Library,
the Chamber of Commerce, Visitation and Outreach, as reading tutors at the
schools, and as transportation and volunteer
coordinators for special events. We are very proud and thankful to our
volunteers for the continued support of the community.

SACHSE
SENIOR VOLUNTEERS HONORED AT THE
RSVP VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION LUNCHEON
Fifteen
of our seniors were given special treatment at the Retired &
Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Recognition Luncheon.
The Senior Source, a division of the Senior Citizens of Greater Dallas,
treated the ladies to lunch and "A Historical Tour of Dallas" by
professional tour guide Mary Lynn Amoyo. The Sachse seniors
volunteer over 1,200 hours each year to various organizations in the
community. At an average rate of $16 per hour, that adds up to
considerable savings to the community programs they help support.
These volunteer hours are reported to the Dallas office, the state office,
and on to the federal office in Washington, D.C. Door prizes were
awarded and five of our ladies won the beautiful mums that adorned the
tables and lucky Bettye Wesson won a 19" color television/VCR
combination. It was a good day for the Sachse seniors.

Visit Nursing Homes
One of our most rewarding efforts is the time spent visiting friends and
relatives now in nursing homes.
Lake Pointe Hospital – Rowlett
These are the ladies that deliver the flowers, the mail, pass out juice
and water, give directions to the patients to various departments and help
where they are needed.
Baylor Hospital – Garland
This is something that may be done at home. There is a great need for baby
receiving blankets and booties in the newborn nursery.
Sachse Chamber of Commerce
The seniors help with clerical work in the Chamber of Commerce office.
“Off Our Rockers” - Sewell Elementary
School
Kindergarten through 3rd grade – work one-on-one to help with reading.
Tax Assistance Program
Offered from February to April each year.
