COVID-19 Vaccine Information AnnouncedThe Garland Health Department (GHD) is collecting names of persons to register for the COVID-19 vaccine waiting list. Vaccination events will not be scheduled until additional vaccine supply is received.
COVID-19 vaccine is still in very limited supply and being prioritized to Phase 1A health care workers and first responders. A small number of vaccines may be available through GHD for adults who meet the Phase 1B criteria (65 and older, or those with underlying medical conditions). To register for the vaccine with GHD at this time, you need to be: • In Phase 1A or Phase 1B • At least 18 years old • A resident or employee of the cities of Garland, Rowlett or Sachse
The vaccine is free. COVID-19 vaccinations are voluntary. GHD strongly recommends all eligible persons register to receive the vaccine. Those receiving the COVID-19 vaccine will have the immunization noted on their official IMMTRAC vaccine record.
More COVID-19 vaccines will become available as manufacturing and distribution ramp up. Monitor the City of Garland’s Twitter and Facebook pages, as well as this page, for updates. The City of Sachse will continue to provide updates for its residents as information becomes available.
Using the online form is the fastest way to get on the list. Please assist family and friends without internet access in completing the form if you are able. Those who are unable to complete the online form can register over the phone by calling the City of Garland’s COVID-19 Hotline at 972-205-3900, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The hotline is currently open seven days a week.
The Garland Health Department is the health authority for Sachse. This means that vaccines made available through the GHD are available to ALL Sachse residents-regardless of which county they reside in.
Aware and prepared. We’ve got you.

Reduce Outdoor Irrigation in Winter MonthsIf you haven’t already done so, it’s time to cut back on using your irrigation system or shut it off completely. But, why not leave your sprinkler at the same setting as in the summer? According to Howard Garrett, The Dirt Doctor, not only is it a huge waste of water, but it damages soil and injures plant roots.
Watering too much forces oxygen out of the soil, creates anaerobic conditions, and makes plant roots lazy. They keep growing right at the surface of the soil rather than being deep and strong. Some watering needs to be done in the winter, but how much depends on your location, amount of sunlight, soil conditions and plant types.
In cool and cold weather, it would be rare to irrigate more than twice a month. Simply turn irrigation controllers to the manual setting so they won’t come on unless you push the button. When dry, windy periods happen, water heavily so the moisture goes deep into the soil. Then, wait as long as possible before watering again. Folks without automatic systems should use the same concept with their hoses and other devices.
This wet-dry cycle or “pulsing” of moisture is what plant roots need, from turf to trees. This helps you conserve water; beautify your landscaping; and reduce disease, insect and weed infestations. Proper moisture management encourages plants to grow roots deeper into the soil, making them healthier and more drought-tolerant. In healthy, well-drained, biologically active soil, moisture is held at the proper level longer, and roots become larger and more efficient at pulling in water and nutrients.
So let's celebrate winter! It's time to reduce water use, save money and enhance your landscape's health and vitality. Going green and saving green have never been easier.
