Library Food Drive Starting May 1

April 24, 2017

Library sets 40-day drive ahead of summer program

Food drive seeks to collect 5,000 food items for local pantry

SACHSE (April 24, 2017) A 40-day food drive will kick off on May 1 and end on June 10, the official start of the Sachse Library Summer Reading Club.

The food drive, titled “Build a Better World” is to benefit the local food pantry, 5 Loaves.  The drive’s title is also the theme for the annual reading program, says Mignon Morse, Library Manager.

“The needs of the food pantry are always top of mind for us,” she said.  “And, so we came up with this way to help restock the shelves at the pantry, and at the same time, use it as a way to give our summer participants an opportunity to have a positive impact on the community.”

The “Build a Better World” goal is 5,000 non-perishable items within those 40 days from May 1 to June 10.  That’s an average of 125 items a day.  To accommodate such an ambitious number, packages of food items will be counted on a per item basis, meaning that a pack of 10 items will count as 10, rather than one.

“Sachse is a very generous community, so we are very confident of reaching our goal,” added Morse.  “I think all we have to do is get the word out, and I know people will respond.”

To encourage donations, donors will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Barnes and Noble Gift Card, and children who contribute to the drive will receive a Raising Cane’s Kids Meal coupon.

Part of the “Build a Better World” food drive will be the construction of a Texas-size structure made with donated cans and boxes.  This edible structure will be officially unveiled on June 10 as part of the annual Summer Reading Club Kick-off event.

While the donated canned items will already be in place for the June 10 unveiling, donors are encouraged to bring boxes of ‘mac and cheese’ of any brand.  These will be added to the structure during the kick-off.

Donations are not required to attend the Summer Reading Kick-off on June 10.

The Sachse Public Library has a full schedule of events and activities, including Story Time each Wednesday and Thursday and on Saturday, May 20.  Also, Paws to Read with Princess the Therapy Dog will return on Tuesdays, May 9 and 23.  For more information, residents are encouraged to visit www.cityofsachse.com/library or call (972) 530-8966.
